Marcis Kulis

Marcis Kulis is considered to be a Latvian musician of the new generation, who is working actively in his homeland and touring abroad as a soloist and a chamber music player.

The clarinetist is a brilliant virtuoso; at the same time his interpretations are notable for their romantic warmth of the tone and the exquisite intonation. His phrasing is as much expressive as that one of a vocalist.

Mr.Kulis was born in Riga in 1969. His first clarinet studies at the age of 12 were under the guidance of prof. Gunars Klavins at the Darzins Music School. In 1986 he graduated with honours from the Latvian Academy of Music (prof. Sigurd Circenis).

In 1990 Mr.Kulis became a first prizewinner at the A.Yuryan Young Musicians Competition and immediately started to work as a soloist in the Latvian National Opera orchestra.

In 1994 Mr.Kulis entered the class of the famous clarinetist Sabine Meyer in Musikhochschule Luebeck (Germany). That was the beginning of his international career. He was the first Latvian clarinetist, winning the highest award at the Crusell Clarinet Contest in Finland in 1995. The first prize at the Possehl Preis competition in Luebeck and the second prize at the German Higher Schools competition in Berlin can be mentioned as Mr.Kulis' next achievements. He was also a finalist at the EBU Forum in Lisbon.

In 1995 and 1996 he won the Deutsche Akademische Austauchdienst (DAAD) and the Jurgen - Selheim – Stiftung scholarships. In 1997 he was awarded with the title “The Best Foreign Student of the Year” in Germany.

In 1999 Mr.Kulis graduated with honours from the Music Higher School in Luebeck.

The clarinetist has been constantly performing in Latvia, Germany, Finland, Lithuania, Portugal, Italy, Malaysia, Singapore, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, France and England. He played in such prestigious concert halls, as Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Die Glocke in Bremen, Schauspielhaus in Berlin, The Lisbon Opera.

The musician cooperates with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra and Saulius Sondeckis, as well as with Rîgas kamerműziíi chamber orchestra, Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, Luebeck Philharmonic orchestra. He has constant musical partnership with Artemis String Quartet (Germany), Nostitz String Quartet (Czech Republic) and Riga String Quartet. Mr.Kulis plays with excellent pianists, such as Petras Genusias (Lithuania), Peter Sagar (Australia), Inna Davidova (Latvia), with the singer Antra Bigaca, cellist Vitautas Sondeckis and conductors Olary Elts and John Crewe.

Due to activities of Mr.Kulis several new Latvian chamber groups, such as Trio Baltica and ARTAdox, have been founded. During the official visits of the President of Latvia to Slovenia, Germany and Estonia Mr. Kulis represented there the Latvian musical art.

The musician has recorded a CD “Mozart's clarinet music”.

Since 1999 till 2001 Mr.Kulis was a professor at the Latvian Academy of Music. He also runs master-courses abroad.
