The Latvian-born Andris Nelsons was appointed, aged 23, as Principal Conductor of the Latvian National Opera in the 2003/04 season, a post he holds today, along with being newly appointed Principal Conductor of the Nordwest Deutsche Philharmonie Herford, from the 2006/07 season. These are achievements which, in the early stages of an international career, have already distinguished the name of Andris Nelsons as one to watch.

Without exception, Andris Nelsons has been invited to return to every orchestra with whom he has made his debut. In the next two seasons, these include the Bayerische Rundfunk, Tonhalle Zurich, Helsinki Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, NDR Hannover and Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin. Beyond that, the future already holds some significant debuts with Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna Radio Symphony, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, NDR Hamburg, Dresden Philharmonic, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Soloists Nelsons works with include Mischa Maisky, Mikhail Pletnev, Gidon Kremer, Håkan Hardenberger, Renaud Capuçon, Olli Mustonen, Sarah Chang, Nikolai Znaider, Alban Gerhardt and Baiba Skride.

In the opera houses, Nelsons made his German opera debut in January 2007 at Deutsche Oper Berlin with performances of La Bohème; he will return there in June 2007 to lead their Wagner concert performance, which will feature soprano Deborah Voigt. Further debuts planned include Hamburg Opera in May/June 2008 conducting Turandot, Frankfurt Opera in November 2008 conducting Boito’s Mefistofele, and Vienna State Opera in 2008/09 conducting Tosca and Madame Butterfly. Forthcoming productions in Riga this season include Aida, La Bohème, Madame Butterfly, Turandot, Pique Dame and Walküre.

Andris Nelsons’ first commercial recording was released by ORFEO Records at the end of 2006, featuring him conducting the Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunk and violinist Arabella Steinbacher, in a recording of Shostakovich’s two Violin Concertos. The disc received the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik in January 2007.

Born in Riga in 1978 into a family of musicians, Andris Nelsons began his career in music as a trumpeter in the Latvian National Opera Orchestra and has also won many prizes for his singing. He was recipient of the prestigious Latvian Grand Music Award for outstanding achievement in music in 2001 and, after graduating in the same year, he went to St. Petersburg to study conducting with Professor Alexander Titov. During this time, Nelsons also attended masterclasses with Neeme Järvi and Jorma Panula. He has been studying privately with Mariss Jansons since 2002.
