The Real Group (vocal jazz ensemble, Sweden)

How many groups can comfortably join the stage with Barbara Hendricks one day and be the support act to Van Morrison the next? How many vocal groups have had the privilege to sell records, get airplay on radio and fill concert halls world-wide?  Probably not many. The Real Group has proven that it is possible for an a cappella group to reach a broad audience.

The five Swedish singers got together in 1984 and since then they have worked with legends like George Martin, Bobby Mc Ferrin and Toots Thielemanns, released 12 albums and done over 3.000 gigs world-wide. By now they have established The Real Group as one of the best a cappella group’s in the world, a fact that has been officially confirmed by many international awards.

There are many explanations to The Real Group’s success. First of all they have developed a vocal-sound of their own, with brilliant arrangements, perfectionism, personality and soul in sweet harmony. Unlike many other vocal group’s they write their own material; original music in an area between pop, jazz and folk music. Last, but not least, they have been highly appreciated for their fine sense of humour, both in their lyrics and in their live performances.

Their studio pop album “Commonly Unique” was released in Scandinavia in October 2001 and reached the top-selling charts at once. February 19th 2001 The Real Group won a prestigious Swedish Grammy Award in the ‘open category’ for their album “Commonly Unique”.

During 2001 the group made successful tours to Austria, Canada, Taiwan and Korea, -besides, of course, the Scandinavian countries.  The Real Group also released a “Best of Album” in Sweden on Virgin Records called “Allt det bästa”, which in 2002 reached  platinum status.

In the June 2002 The Real Group released a new album “Stämning” together with the Swedish choir legend, Eric Ericson, an album filled with Swedish choral music. The album immediately entered the album charts and has stayed in top ten for 13 weeks (peak at 2nd place). At the time of the release The Real Group had just returned from performing, as the only European act, on the pre-opening ceremony of The Worldwide Soccer  Championships in Seoul in front of 60.000 spectators and TV-teams from 80 countries!

During Autumn 2002 and Spring 2003 the group made a successful tour with GSKK, one of the best chamber choirs in Scandinavia, bringing classical choir music into a totally new dimension.

In February 2005 their much expected follow-up to “Commonly Unique” was released in Scandinavia. “In the Middle of Life” was and still is climbing the charts while the group is doing an extensive tour in Scandinavia.

The Real Grouphas also recently returned from successful tours in Korea and Japan and are looking forward to further releases in new exciting territories in the near future, especially an international release of their greatest hits album called “So Far”.
